Unai Emery make Aston Villa finish claim next season with much work in place

Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Paul Merson predicts Villans’ fate ahead of new Premier League season kicking off at Newcastle United.

Paul Merson believes Aston Villa could finish in the top-six in the Premier League next season.

The Villa old boy made the prediction when assessing the prospects of all Premier League teams in 2023/24.

Emery and Co face a particularly challenging campaign, with the club also involved in European football while also aiming to improve on last season’s seventh-placed finish.

And pundit Merson is confident Villa can take it all in their stride next term. “Aston Villa could push for a European place yet again this season,” Merson says in his latest Sports Keeda column looking at the new season.

“They’ve got Europa Conference League fixtures this season, and we’ll have to see how they deal with that. But they’ve got a great manager and an excellent squad, and they could finish in the top six.”

Villa had a remarkable campaign after Emery took over from Steven Gerrard last October, the former Arsenal boss reversing their fortunes with a squad of players that had only won two of their first 11 games.

At the time of Gerrard’s sacking, Villa were just above the relegation zone and expected to face a fight against the drop rather than mounting a challenge for European football. But that is just what they did. A seventh-place finish rounded off an impressive turnaround for Villa, who will now be competing in Europe for the first time in 13 years.

Villa will enter the Europa Conference League at the final play-off stage before the group draw. They will play a two-legged play-off round next month with the matches scheduled for August 24 and August 31.

As a result, they could be playing in the excess of 50 games next season. They kick-off their campaign at Newcastle United on Saturday, August 12 (5.30pm kick-off).
