Two positives and one negative from Newcastle’s Champions League draw

The draw for the Champions League group stage has now been completed and Newcastle United now know their three opponents.

Our initial reaction is that we have been given a very difficult group that will be extremely tough to get out of – a group of death, you may say. Newcastle will face Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in Group F.

It was always going to be a tough draw, but there are certainly positives as well as negatives to take from the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco.

Testing ourselves against the big boys

No lengthy away days

The Toon Army will already be planning trips to France, Germany and Italy. They are not too outlandish, and the destinations will certainly please Eddie Howe.

Travelling away from home will certainly test this Newcastle squad, but it is good to see that our away games are not too far away. Hopefully that will help the team deal with the rigours of playing in the Premier League and the Champions League.

It will be very difficult to even fall into the Europa League

It is going to be fantastic seeing Newcastle up against some top tier clubs, but it is also very difficult to see how on earth Eddie Howe’s side are going to avoid coming rock bottom.

The team that comes third will drop into the Europa League, but even that will be extremely tough.

We will really have to rely on our home form to avoid coming bottom of the group. Bring it on!
