Romano: Newcastle in talks to sign another defender after missing out on £38m man

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United are in discussions over a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Joachim Andersen.

He reports that we’ve spoken with the player’s agent “multiple times”, adding that we’ve been big admirers of the Danish international for a “long time.”

The Guardian reported on our interest in the 27-year-old last week, stating that ourselves and Spurs are yet to make an official approach for Andersen in a deal that could ‘go down to the wire’ over the final few weeks of the summer window.

Despite suggestions it was all agent-driven, Romano insists that we also “had conversations” about Axel Disasi. However, the Frenchman is no longer an option after sealing a £38m move to Chelsea.

Tino Livramento is expected to seal a move to St James’ Park in the next 24-48 hours after arriving on Tyneside for his medical over the weekend and it’s thought the club have turned their attentions to a right-sided centre-back, as we revealed last week.

Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, here’s what Romano had to say about Andersen and Disasi:

“Let’s see what happens with the centre-backs, I think, as an extra deal.

“They always had conversations with [Axel] Disasi but then he joined Chelsea, also they spoke multiple times with the agents of Joachim Andersen who is a player they have appreciated for a long time.”
