Leeds miss a trick as £12m PL star joins promotion rivals on loan, he would’ve been perfect

Southampton have completed the signing of Flynn Downes on loan from West Ham United after the two sides did a deal for James Ward-Prowse – he is just what Leeds United lacked in the middle of the park.

Downes, 25, joined West Ham from Swansea City last summer. He played 35 times for the Hammers last term – as they ran out Europa Conference League winners. But West Ham have made midfield signings.

While Declan Rice has gone, Edson Alvarez and Ward-Prowse have come in. It means Downes has fallen down the pecking order and that has seen Downes decide to go out on loan – replacing Ward-Prowse.View Tweet

Leeds meanwhile, have been linked with midfielders. We have lost Adam Forshaw, Weston McKennie, Marc Roca and now Tyler Adams. We have only brought in Ethan Ampadu. Midfielders are a necessity.

But bringing in the likes of Glen Kamara, Jonjo Shelvey or other no.4-type midfielders is a waste of time when Ampadu is going to be a regular. Leeds need a box-to-box, tenacious no.6 alongside Ampadu.

Archie Gray is perhaps, too attacking for the role and might be better as a 10 – given freedom to shine. Downes would have been ideal. An unrelenting work rate, teemed with technical ability in all thirds.

He was perhaps unlucky not to play more for West Ham last season following his £12m move to West Ham. Very experienced in England’s second tier, he would have been just what Leeds need in midfield.

But it comes a a double blow for Leeds. not only have we missed a trick in not signing Downes. But we also watch a rival for Championship promotion bring him in – having already beaten us to Ryan Manning.
