Journalist confirms Tottenham’s interest in 22-year-old is ‘very very credible’

The Daily Express reporter Ryan Taylor is confident that Tottenham do hold a genuine interest in Nottingham Forest sensation Brennan Johnson but the journalist revealed the Lilywhites face plenty of competition for the youngster.

There was already plenty of excitement around Johnson at the start of last season and the attacking midfielder’s stock has only grown even further in light of his impressive displays in his debut Premier League campaign.

It was reported by The Daily Mail on 31 July that Tottenham could turn their attention to the 22-year-old over the coming weeks but the report added that the Forest’s £50m asking price for the youngster could prove excessive for the North London club.

The Telegraph even reported on Monday that Spurs have offered Forest the choice of including any of Bryan Gil, Djed Spence and Joe Rodon (who has since joined Leeds on loan) as a part of a deal to sign Johnson.

Tottenham are in the mix for Brennan Johnson

Taylor believes that there is definitely truth to reports of Tottenham’s interest in Johnson, describing the situation as ‘one to watch’ over the coming weeks.

The journalist further asserted that a move for the Wales international could be linked to Harry Kane’s impending departure, even though the Forest star would not be a direct replacement for the 30-year-old.

When asked about Spurs’ pursuit of Johnson, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “If Kane goes, I know Johnson isn’t the same kind of player as him, but I think Tottenham are going to have to sign more diverse attacking options.

“I think that will be the way to deal with losing Kane. I don’t think you’re going to replace someone like Kane, so you’re better off having different options in changing the style.

“From what I understand their interest is actually very, very credible in Johnson. That said, there are other clubs in for Johnson, not least Brentford who have had a club record £35 million bid rejected.

“But there are other teams in the mix from the Premier League for Johnson as well. So I think that could be one to watch.”

Johnson is extremely versatile and could not only operate as a number eight but could also cover for Son and Kulusevski in wide roles.

The 22-year-old undoubtedly has a high ceiling and Postecoglou might fancy his chances of moulding the Forest star into a finished product.
