Journalist backs £120k-a-week Newcastle man to challenge for Golden Boot next year

Former Newcastle United coach Dean Saunders has said he expects Swedish international Alexander Isak to score plenty of goals for the Magpies next season.

The ex-Wales international, Dean Saunders was a coach at Newcastle for two years alongside Graeme Souness and has been speaking to TalkSPORT about Newcastle’s upcoming season and has put his faith in Newcastle’s record signing.

In a clip posted to Twitter (or X or whatever it is these days), Saunders said: “I think they’re going to do really well and I think Isak is going to score bag full of goals. Outside bet – golden boot, Isak.”

Dean Saunders may well have a good point about Isak

In limited game time last season, Isak showed he certainly has an eye for goal, coming away with 10 goals in 22 Premier League appearances and displayed many other mouthwatering attributes beyond just scoring goals.

He gave the impression that the £63million we spent on him will turn out to be a bargain. Currently on £120,000-a-week, Isak is one of the squad’s highest earners too, but if he delivers the goods this season there’ll be no complaints about money being wasted.

Isak spent the last few games of the season operating mostly on the left flank as a goal creator, which was when he had one of the greatest assists of all time chalked off his record thanks to a deflection, but if Howe is going to play him through the middle with Harvey Barnes or Anthony Gordon on the left then I expect Saunders may be on to something.

Isak will be the preferred starting striker over Wilson for Newcastle

I said last season that if it weren’t for Erling Haaland I’d be backing Isak for the Premier League’s top scorer award, and now with Harry Kane potentially moving to Bayern Munich, he’s got an even better shot.

With Barnes or Gordon on the left wing, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali behind him and in-form Miguel Almiron or Jacob Murphy on the right, we’re primed to create more goal scoring opportunities this season, and I back Isak to be the main man this season over Callum Wilson.

I still think Wilson will bag his fair share of goals, but I expect the lanky Swede to be the starting striker for most games.
