Dan Bardell: Aston Villa triple exit on the cards due to FFP, Saudi Arabian moves possible

Lucas Digne is one of three Aston Villa players who the club would sell if the right offer came through, with Saudi Arabian sides the most likely to make a bid, according to Dan Bardell.

The 30-year-old Frenchman has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, with The Mirror reporting in their print edition (4 August, pg 55) that the club could offer Villa £25million for the left-back.

Digne played a full 90 minutes in place of left-back regular Alex Moreno in Villa’s Premier League opening-day clash against Newcastle, which ended in a humbling 5-1 defeat on Saturday (12 August).

Bardell claims that while Villa wouldn’t want to lose these key players they would accept good offers to help Financial Fair Play obligations, while Digne’s departure could open the door for Villa’s preferred full-back profile.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I think at the moment, Villa have got three players in Leon Bailey, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne that if someone came in for them with the right money, which would probably be Saudi Arabia let’s face it, they’d sell.

“Even though they wouldn’t really want to lose them in an ideal world if they got the chance to get a high fee for any of those players, I think Villa would take it.

“They’re also happy to keep those players around, and they’ll get minutes. But I don’t think they’re in Villa’s best starting 11, so it probably makes sense.

“Looking at Financial Fair Play, if an opportunity arose where they could get some money back and free up some money on the wage bill, it’s worth doing.

“With Lucas Digne’s specifically, I’ve been told that Villa are looking at a lot of young full-backs in La Liga, right-backs and left-backs.

“If Digne went, Villa would have the opportunity to bring in a player who has more room to grow and with reduced wages. They wouldn’t need to play every week because of Moreno.

“He’s 30 years old now as well, so I think if Saudi made a bid Villa would probably take it. They’d also probably rather it be towards the end of the window as they wait for Moreno to be available.

“It’s one to keep an eye on.”
