Alan Shearer fumes as Newcastle legend hits out at key decision in Liverpool clash

One of the most evocative Premier League fixtures around offered up another dramatic moment on Sunday.

Games between Newcastle United and Liverpool often provide much to talk about, with some iconic clashes over the years.

Sunday’s game gave us another and we did not have to wait long for it.

Within the opening stages of the first-half, Trent Alexander-Arnold was booked after throwing the ball away following a coming together with Anthony Gordon. What felt like seconds later, the England defender hauled Gordon down but avoided a second booking.

Alan Shearer fumes at decision not to send Trent Alexander-Arnold off

With Newcastle players fuming on the pitch and staff doing the same on the sidelines (the bench was said to have gone “apoplectic” about the decision), club legend Alan Shearer took to Twitter to fume.

Shearer vented his frustration and called for more consistency across the board, tweeting: “Consistency. If the first isn’t given then that’s a yellow.”

A key moment in the game

While Darwin Nunez had a lot do for both goals as Liverpool came from behind to win the game in the dying embers, the fact Alexander-Arnold was still on the pitch naturally helped their cause.

Granted, Virgil van Dijk was sent off but them being down to nine would surely have given Jurgen Klopp’s side too much of a mountain to climb.

It was a huge moment in the game and one that could have easily gone the other way. Though Newcastle have themselves to blame for the rather pathetic way they threw the game away, few would doubt that Liverpool got lucky there.
