‘A pleasure to watch’: Pep Guardiola says £60k-a-week Newcastle man is simply ‘incredible’

Newcastle United face a massive test tonight as they take on champions Manchester City in a bizarre 8pm Saturday kick-off.

The clash between Newcastle and Manchester City is the first to be played at 8pm on a Saturday this season as the TV scheduling overlords moved to cram more games into the schedule by shifting fixtures around rather than lifting the archaic 3pm black-out.

Newly christened TNT Sport (formerly BT Sport) will show the game tonight and they have spoken to Pep Guardiola ahead of the game and the Spanish coach was full of praise for Newcastle and in particular, Eddie Howe.

Pep Guardiola thinks Newcastle are a threat to Man City

When asked if he thought Newcastle could be a threat to City’s Premier League title charge this season, Pep said: “They were [a threat] last season,” he admitted.

“A team that qualifies for the Champions League last season and is still there is a really good team.

“And I think as a team, from outside, they make smart decisions. [Anthony] GordonHarvey Barnes, now Lewis Hall. They buy what they need in that moment and they know exactly what they have to do.”

He then went on to praise £60k-a-week man, Eddie Howe for the job he’s done saying: “Eddie Howe has done an incredible job and it’s a pleasure to watch them. They’ve arrived to stay.”

It’s still remarkable how far Newcastle have come in such a short time under Eddie Howe and the difference in the type of football Newcastle play now to what they did under the previous gaffer is night and day.

The game between Man City and Newcastle could be a classic

Granted, as Guardiola said, Newcastle have added some quality signings that allow us to play a more attractive brand of football, but there are still a lot of players in the squad who get regular game time who were part of the old hoof-ball regime.

Newcastle have never won at the Etihad in the Premier League but there’s never been a better time to break that streak than tonight. City are without several key players and Newcastle’s confidence will by sky-high after last week’s win.

Whatever happens, it’s going to be an entertaining match.
